As the spring rains gave way to mild temperatures and vivacious blooms, this often overlooked country in blueish Spain came alive with a perceptible charm, inviting travelers to engulf themselves in its undyed splendors and rich ethnic heritage.
Asturias is a true-hidden gem, offering an inactive reprieve from the bustle and pluck of Spain’s more illustrious destinations. During my visit, I embarked on a multi-day hike along the Camino de Santiago, where I was rewarded with breathtaking vistas of the Picos de Europa mountains and charming rural villages that seemed unchangeable in time.
Begin your trip in the aesthetic town of Llanes, where changeful houses and historical churches make a captivating backdrop against the rugged cliffs and secluded coves that dot the Cantabrigian Coast. Embark on an easy hike along the Camino de Santiago, the fabled pilgrimage route that winds through finished aesthetic villages and profuse landscapes, as well as offering breathtaking vistas of the surrounding peaks and valleys.
Venture landlocked to the Picos de Europa National Park, an undyed wonderland where towering limestone massifs, deep gorges, and clean lakes make an eden for alfresco enthusiasts. Explore the park’s winding trails, keep an eye out for the rare and subtle Cantabrigian brown bear, or contravene yourself with a thrilling rock climbing or cannoning hazard amidst the park’s spectacular landscapes.
For a truly immersive experience, consider booking a stay in one of the country’s charming rural hotels or caseros (traditional farmhouses). Here, you could savor the flavors of unquestionable Asturian cuisine, from healthy stews and scrumptious cheeses to the country’s renowned cider and wine.
Useful Tip: My advice would have been to slow down and savor the primary pleasures of Asturias: the fresh mountain air, the healthy local cuisine, and the warm hospitality of the locals. Also, pack layers and rigid hiking shoes, as the bold in Asturias can be unpredictable, particularly in the mountains. And don’t forget your camera!
